I would actually disagree.

There is a lot of great jazz happening in KC

There is a lot of great jazz in NYC

What you would hear going to bar in NYC is NOT a cut above what happens in KC. I lived there for 2 years (off and on), heard a lot of music, met a lot of musicians. There is more music happening in NYC. is it better? I really really do not think so

NYC is, for the most part, a pretty conservative crowd. The best groups are still mostly underground and you have to look for them. Just dropping by a local bar does not instantly mean you'll hear music a cut above KC.

People should be proud of what they do in KC, and elsewhere. And they should work to create a scene where they live. Trust me, trying to get music performed and get spaces is not any easier in NYC. It's difficult for different reasons. In KC, we might only have a few venues willing to let BHIC play. In NYC, we may have 50x the venues, but 200x the groups. and don't even think about trying to get in with established groups. it takes years for performers out there to finally work their way into the inner sanctum of music.

I dunno man, I never heard a concert like the one we gave in my 2 years in NYC. granted, i wasn't going to every concert in town, but, that, again, is a problem. there is an over-saturation. After my 3 years on the East Coast, 2 in NYC, i'll take KC and it's scene any day. no one should reproduce NYC. trust me, that'd alienate most of the people who choose NOT to be in NYC. i coulda stayed there. I chose not to. I don't want that scene here. I want a better one

a more creative one

a more daring one

I didn't mean to imply that we're less creative in KC because that's certainly not what I believe.

i mean as technicians, as performers, as everything.

i don't like all the hype around NYC. yeah, it's got something going on, but it also has Lincoln Center Jazz...It's an incredibly conservative place on the surface.

I'm just over NYC. I went there, i created my own group, worked hard to get 2 performances, couldn't even BUY a violin player for the second performance. seriously, a town like NYC, couldn't BUY a 2nd violinist...

I will definitely take KC and it's scene any day over NYC.
