It pays to be a winner
There seems to have been some mixed feelings about the 2012 Thelonius Monk Competition on the interwebs. Some people question the value of competition in an arena devoid of objectivity and point out that Monk himself probably wouldn't win his own competition. They may have a point but it's a boring one.
Forget all that overly-serious philosophizing, why can't I watch the competition? The best young players in the world playing their asses off. I want to watch that. If we can't go all American Idol on the competition with a reality tv format can't somebody at least put some videos up on youtube? I feel like there is a big opportunity being lost in publicity for this competition. It feels like National Public Television material to me.
